About Me

SM Round LogoHI! I’m Erin. I’m a momma to a precious, independent, loving, and slightly sassy five-year old little lady, and a tender-hearted, active, and adorable two-year old little man. They keep my wonderful hubs and I on our toes and laughing, always laughing. With both of us working full time, we cherish every minute spent with our little family. Our ideal evening is a movie under the stars in our backyard or cramming our two couches together to make our “crazy couch”. Speaking of the hubs, the man is a rockstar. True IronDad. I tell my daughter all the time, “When you grow up, marry someone just like daddy.” I hit the jackpot.

We live in sunny SoCal and are lucky to have much of our family close by. We grew up in the district I now teach for, and last year, I had the opportunity to transfer to the elementary school I grew up loving. It’s almost unreal… my (AMAZING!) 3rd grade teacher teaches just down the hall from me. I teach 6th grade and what excites me even more is that my little girl will start Kindergarten in the fall.  I have such vivid memories of being a student there. I was blessed with some of the best teachers in the world who spurred my love of the profession (them, and the Ticonderogas of course) and carrying on their tradition is such an honor. This is my 8th year teaching and I have found my home sweet home (again).

Prior to this position, I taught  3rd, 4th, and most recently, 8th grade science. Never in a million years did I imagine myself teaching chemistry and physics, and certainly not to middle schoolers, but I loved it! I’ve always had a passion for science and I lucked out with an amazingly dedicated team. If you continue to follow me, you’ll find that I am a total science nerd, and I am totally okay with that. I revel in my nerdy-ness. I recently had the opportunity to see my childhood idol, Billy Nye the Science Guy speak. He was asked something along the lines of “what characterizes someone as a nerd?” and he had the best response ever. He said, “A nerd is someone who is deeply passionate about something.” A few years ago my husband said to me, “I didn’t realize you were such a nerd!” It was the highest praise he could have given me ; ) That’s me, nerdy… passionate about science education. I’m excited about the direction science education is headed and believe that it is our duty to teach kids how to DO science, not just about science.

Let’s see, what else? Bill Nye. Harry Potter. Bulletin boards. Target. An organized class library. Professional development days (yes, I love them… lunch out with my buddies? I’m in!). Creative writing. Music and art. Shel Silverstein. Post its. Ron Clark. Teachers Pay Teachers (check it out). Book clubs. Popsicle sticks. Fresh glue bottles. Sunflowers. Positive reinforcement. Rafe Esquith. Book Fair. Pinterest. Science camp. New dry erase markers. Heel clicks. Anything that sparkles. Crayola. And let’s not forget to mention what makes it all possible… coffee. Iced, hot, decaf, half-caf, I don’t discriminate.
Yes, it’s a wonderful thing, this teacher life. Awesome, but exhausting. Refill please…
